Finger Lakes Wine and Herb Festival 2013

Do you love wine?  Do you have a green thumb?  Bring these two loves together right here in Upstate New York!  Wine-lovers and gardeners will rejoice at the 2013 Wine and Herb Festival, hosted by the Cayuga Wine Trail.  On two consecutive weekends (April 26-28, 2013 and May 3-5, 2013) their 16 member wineries welcome you to a herb-infused experience.

With your ticket, you'll receive a souvenir wineglass, the complimentary garden additions, a potted vegetable or herb plant, and a plant carrier.  Each participating winery will also offer wine and herbed-food pairings to event participants.  Find a dish that you especially enjoy?  Recipe cards will be available so that you can prepare the bounty from your garden and relive your Finger Lakes Wine and Herb Festival adventure.

Also up for grabs are a number of prizes to be drawn from all event participants.  Prizes include items from the Corning Museum of Glass, Water to Wine Tours, LaTourelle Resort and Spa, and more.
Tickets are limited, and are available by calling the Cayuga Wine Trail or visiting any Wegmans in the Finger Lakes Region.  Of course, this innkeeper suggests that you make the call to assure that you don't miss out on the event!

And event days aren't limited to just the weekends!  Each Friday of the event, four wineries welcome you just a little early.  So plan an extended weekend and visit Montezuma, King Ferry, Long Point, and Six Mile Creek Wineries a day early.  On Saturday and Sunday, all 16 Cayuga Wine Trail wineries welcome you between 10am and 6pm.

Advance tickets are $40 for a single, and $60 per couple; if you're the designated driver(s), subtract $5 from each above price (you can still taste the food, gather the recipes, and collect the start of your garden).  Tickets at the door (if available) are $45 for a single participant, and $65 for a couple.  All prices are subject to 8% sales tax, and any mailed tickets are subject to a handling fee.

A bed and breakfast weekend is made even more perfect when you can explore our award-winning wines and wineries, and Wine Trail events are a perfect excuse to plan your getaway to the Inn at Gothic Eves.  Make reservations today for either of these fun event weekends!

Finger Lakes Labyrinths for Meditation and Spiritual Well-Being

Since ancient times, labyrinths have been used for the purpose of "righting" one's spirit. Whether used for meditation, prayer, or personal discovery, a labyrinth has a way of bringing a sense of peace, serenity, and even a sense of progression through life's problems. For some, visiting a labyrinth is no more than a kick - a fun little novelty as a break from their normal lives. For others, walking this compact journey can be a profound experience, providing insight and answers to things that have been concerning or troubling them.
Guests staying at The Inn at Gothic Eves have a chance to right their spirit a couple of ways: you can enjoy the cozy rooms, hot tubs that will wash away your stress and cares, and the quieter surroundings that only a small town can offer, but you might enjoy the potentially profound experience that can only be had at one of the area's labyrinths. Why not plan to visit one during your stay?

Despite what movies and stories may lead you to believe, these structures are not mazes.  A proper labyrinth has only one path to follow, usually within a circular boundary.  The path turns back on itself again and again as you journey to the center "resting" area, and from which you follow the exact same path on your return journey.  Some labyrinths feature a single path that progress from the beginning to the end, without the center resting area.

Indoors or outdoors, a labyrinth brings peaceful thought and reflection to your life.  Indoor paths are often as simple as large floor coverings or carpets, but can actually be artistic installations of metal or wood that allow for the use of music, controlled lighting, and even scent to aid your "travels".  Outdoor trails can be soft grassy paths amongst plantings (as short as flowers, or as tall as hedgerows), stone-within-stone paths, or even graveled ways that allow you to sense all of nature during your walk.  Sometimes, organized walks are arranged where drums or certain music will be played to 'enhance' you all-around experience.

While this is far from a complete guide-of-use, suffice it to say that when you walk a labyrinth's path, you should leave behind all semblances of timekeeping and technology.  The walk is about you - not about time, having others join you (either physically or virtually.

The walk begins as you enter the path.  Concentrate on the walk itself - understand that it is a journey of both mind and body.  Follow the meandering as slowly as you need to release your mind of worries, concerns, or even doubts.  As you progress toward the center of the design, concentrate on the very basics of existence - those things you can experience with your senses - and open your mind to the entire experience.  When you reach the center itself, pause for a while to listen to yourself and your own spirit, get a better understanding of the journey that you are actually taking, and mentally note any illuminations you are experiencing.  On your journey outward, reflect on the experience as a whole and how to use it in your daily life.

Sound like something you would like to experience?  Below is a list of labyrinths in the area:  when you plan your vacation to the Inn at Gothic Eves, a visit to one of these Finger Lakes locations is just a short drive from the bed and breakfast.  Come for a relaxing getaway and receive the added benefit of a potentially profound experience!  Outdoor labyrinths are open seasonally between late spring and late fall.

Interestingly enough, there is an organization called the  World Labyrinth Society that is based right here in Trumansburg!  This organization supports and educates anyone interested in learning about, or building labyrinths of any type, and keeping the sacred nature of these creations intact.

Finger Lakes Live Theater and Shows in Ithaca NY

Besides art and agriculture, the Finger Lakes Region is also known for bringing some pretty big acts to our musical venues.  Our local entertainment agent, Dan Smalls, has booked some great upcoming shows that you can catch during your visit to The Inn at Gothic Eves!

Two of the best venues are just minutes away in Ithaca.  The Haunt is a mid-sized nightclub and BBQ eatery on Willow Avenue.  Because of its size, casual environment, and great food, "smaller" talented bands like to pack the house here, treating patrons to a rip-roaring good time.  The State Theater on State Street is a historic performance venue that seats 1600, making it a great place for bigger acts to put on an intimate shown for a larger audience.

The following are the acts coming to these two locations in the next couple of months.  Pick up tickets now to enjoy a great concert during your getaway here in Upstate New York!  Interested in something other than music?  A few other options are also listed for comedy and drama at the State Theater.  Shows are being added all the time, so check the websites for the latest additions to the performance schedule!

Finger Lakes Wine Country: 2013 Passports and Specials

Spring is almost here, and with it comes winery tourism season!  The Inn at Gothic Eves is in the perfect position for access to two different wine trails:  Cayuga Wine Trail and Seneca Wine Trail.  Much like the names imply, the trails encircle the lakes they are named after.  Thirteen of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail's members and fourteen of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail's members are located within 20 miles of Trumansburg.  That's a lot of wine-tasting opportunity for guests staying with us!  If you're a wine-lover and want even more of a reason to plan a Finger Lakes bed and breakfast getaway, let me also mention the added incentives offered by the Wine Trails:  Seneca's Riesling to Visit Passport; and Cayuga's 30-year celebration, and Vino Visa Coupon book!

Cayuga Lake Wine Trail:  30 Year Anniversary Celebration
2013 Marks the 30th Anniversary of this Trail's creation.  This, America's very first wine trail, began with just five wineries, but has grown to encompass 15 different winery destinations, 1 cidery, and four distilleries.  The locals aren't the only ones who think that the Cayuga Wine Trail's wineries produce great wines:  trail wineries and their vintages have accumulated over 5300 medals, here in the United States and abroad!

To honor what is becoming a very rich wine history around Cayuga Lake, the wine trail members are offering specials on the 30th of each month throughout 2013!  Including specials on wine, food, pairings, and tastings, all welcome you to take advantage of this great occasion!

Note:  Check with each winery before your visit to ensure they are open, as the different wineries have their own hours of operation.  Some wineries do not open until later in the year.

Cayuga Lake Wine Trail:  Vino Visa Coupon Book

If your visit will not fall over the 30th of the month, you may be interested in this inexpensive coupon book, offering a variety of savings opportunities at both the wineries, and also select restaurants and attractions along the way!  Costing just $15, there is the potential to save over $300 if you manage to visit all the participating establishments during the year!

Seneca Lake Wine Trail:  Winery Passports
During the winter and spring/summer seasons, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail offers a passport  for your wine-tasting pleasure!  Each passport treats you to a free flight of wines for tasting at each winery featured (one visit to each winery per passport).

Note:  One passport per taster.  Passports are not intended for large groups over 7 tasters - tasting fees apply for large groups.

  • Polar Passport
If your visit to Upstate New York's wine country is to take place soon (during the month of March), this is a great time to take advantage of the final days of the Polar Passport!  Cost is just $12 ($12.96 after tax); this late in the season, it is best to purchase the passport from one of the wineries.
  • Riesling to Visit Passport (good between 4/1 - 7/31)
In honor of our regions great Rieslings, this passport costs $18 plus tax (and online reservation fees if purchased online), and go on sale both online on March 29, and at the area's wineries on April 1 (no joke).  If you order online, you will have your passport in about a week.
Plan your visit to Trumansburg and enjoy lodging that rivals any Ithaca hotel.  In fact, the hospitality and personalized service you receive during your stay at The Inn at Gothic Eves might just have you swearing off hotels for good.  Come enjoy a slower pace, beautiful scenery, and of course the wineries and their specials along the Cayuga and Seneca Lake Wine Trails!
