Award-Winning Finger Lakes Beverages: Visit For Our Wines and Coffee!

If the natural beauty, the lakes, the entertainment, dining, shopping, or the relaxed pace haven't convinced you to come to Trumansburg for a visit, maybe something as simple as the beverages in the area WILL convince you.  I'm proud to share some exiting news in relation to Upstate New York's beverages of choice!

TripAdvisor.com has awarded the Finger Lakes Region a place in their 2012 list of top ten Best Wine Destinations in the United States!  You can find us on the list at #4, just behind three of the "more commonly thought-of" wine areas: California (Sonoma and Napa Valley) and Oregon (Willamette Valley), proving that our perfect grape-growing climate, coupled with our talented vintners, result in some of the finest wines in the land.  With over 45 wineries here between Cayuga and Seneca Lake alone (all within about 30 miles if Trumansburg), Trumansburg is the ideal base-of-operations for a wine-tasting vacation!

But I'll admit that raving about the area wineries isn't a new thing here at Gothic Eves... it's been done before, and I'm sure it'll be done again...

However, let me tell you about the coffee prodigy of the Finger Lakes Region:  gimme! Coffee!

This local company was born in the year 2000 in a tiny Ithaca storefront with the goal of perfecting espresso in both roasting and brewing techniques.  Since then, the company has brewed its way into the hearts of Upstate New Yorkers, and has even found it's way to the Big Apple itself.  This is the same coffee you will wake up smelling During your Inn at Gothic Eves stay, and the same coffee that can be found at the local storefront here in town.

In fact, Roast Magazine, the nationwide publication of the specialty-coffee industry, has awarded Ithaca-based gimme! Coffee the distinction of Macro Roaster of the Year for 2013!

But what does this mean?

Each year, the magazine's staff awards two Roaster of the Year awards with the intent to inspire both current coffee producers, and those who are considering entering the industry, toward exemplary business practices and product.  Both the Micro Roaster (less than 100,000 pounds of coffee production) and Macro Roaster (over 100,000 pounds of coffee production) Categories take into consideration a company's goals; sustainable practices; relationship with their employees, the public, and the industry; marketing and general business practices; and of course their product.

This award is a very big deal in the world of coffee, and recipients who are honored with the recognition know that they have finally achieved some of their coffee and business goals.  Of course, don't expect gimme! Coffee to stop in their quest for further improvements or perfection, as this company still has some big ideas to implement and methods to perfect!

Award-winning wines AND coffee?  Where else can you get that than here in Upstate New York?  So why not plan your getaway to the area to experience these perfections of liquid refreshment?  While here, purchase your own award-winning wine from an award-winning region, and take home our area's award-winning coffee to start your days off right.  Visit before the end of March to take advantage of Birthday Special bed and breakfast pricing which includes complementary access to the new hot tubs as well!

You may already know that our many wineries have wine tasting opportunities at their individual locations.  But did you know you can do much the same at gimme! Coffee?  Every Saturday at noon, gimme! Coffee's training lab at 506 W State Street in Ithaca offers coffee cuppings to the public to learn more about the company's coffee, processing, and tastes!  Just 10 miles away from the Inn, this is a perfect way to spend part of your New York state getaway!

An Inn At Gothic Eves Celebration: 18th Birthday!

Eighteen years ago,
it started with a beautiful house and a dream.  In November of 1994, the property at 112 East Main Street in Trumansburg beckoned with all its beauty, history, and wonderful grounds.  After some loving care and preparation, the Inn at Gothic Eves was opened on New Year's Day, 1995.  In the time since, so many of you have made this dream a success with your support, patronage, and belief in this one woman's dream.  It is for this reason that the inn's 18th birthday is dedicated to you: the guests and believers.  Please join me for this birthday Guest Appreciation Winter and celebration of this inn becoming 'an adult'!

In honor of this milestone, the Year End Special (now known as the Birthday Special) is being extended through March!  Stay 3 nights and pay for just 2, or stay 2 nights and pay for just 1.5.  It is my way of saying thank you for your continued patronage, friendship, and support!

During your stay, you are welcome to enjoy the inn's birthday present:  two brand new Jacuzzi tubs!  (Really, what 18-year-old wouldn't LOVE even one for their birthday?)  These new tubs, one at The Inn, and one at The Potter House, will be up and running throughout the winter, offering a bit of warm respite to the chilly weather.  While there will eventually be a $25/hour fee for private use, however winter guests will be treated to the tubs as part of their stay.

Never been to Trumansburg or the Finger Lakes area?  This small town lets you truly feel like you are escaping the hustle and bustle of life.  Our proximity to some amazing wineries affords you the opportunity to taste the bounty of the region.  And just because we are a small town doesn't mean you will miss any of the dining and shopping opportunities of the larger communities, as our own Hazelnut Kitchen offers amazing gourmet dining, and our various art galleries and antique stores offer some fun shopping.  For outdoor lovers, the gorgeous Taughannock Falls State Park us just outside of town to the east, and the Finger Lakes National Forest is just a little further in distance to our west.  If you find yourself wanting some 'large town' action, Ithaca is just 10 miles to the south and offers concerts, more antiques and art, other shopping opportunities and all the fun that a College Town can provide with Cornell University as an anchor!

And certainly don't let winter scare you away!  You will be greeted each morning with a delicious hot breakfast and gimmee! coffee.  Spa Services are available throughout the year, area wineries are open for your tasting pleasure, the parks never close, and there are plenty of winter events to enjoy throughout the season!  A fire will be burning in the hearth for your return.  Oh, and did I mention the brand new hot tubs?

The Gothic Eves Birthday Party lasts until March 31, 2013, so plan your winter bed and breakfast getaway in Upstate New York soon!  You will be welcomed as family to help celebrate this major inn milestone, and your stay will surely be one to remember.

Upstate New York Entertainment: Concerts in Ithaca

Music lovers, celebrate!  There are some great performers coming to nearby Ithaca, NY during the months of November and December.  Just 12 miles from your Upstate New York inn choice, Ithaca is perfect for a quick evening outing during your bed and breakfast getaway at Gothic Eves.  Pick your favorite performer, enjoy an evening of music, and return to a cozy bed, and ambiance that you'll only find here in Trumansburg!

November, 2012 Shows:
  • 11/15 - Turkuaz with Spiritual Rez at The Haunt in Ithaca: Turkuaz is a band based in funk with a smattering of soul and new wave thrown in for both confusion and good measure, resulting in a lively time for the ears.  Spiritual Rez brings in their own upbeat sound to the stage with a funk-dance sound.  You'll be dancing all night!
  • 11/16 - John Hiatt and the Combo at the State Theatre of Ithaca: The influential and incomparable John Hiatt graces the stage to treat you to samples of his amazing work, both old and new.  If the name doesn't ring a bell, know that you've heard his music:  if not out of his own mouth, then from the mouths of others.  Bonnie Raitt's hit "Thing Called Love?"  That's a Hiatt song.  "Have a Little Faith in Me" is a Hiatt original (later remade by Joe Cocker).  The Jeff Healy Band's "Angel Eyes" also came from the brain of this amazing singer/songwriter.  "Riding with the King" originally came from Hiatt's mouth before Clapton made it popular.  And I could go on.  But why not hear these greats from the man himself as he teams up with The Combo here in Upstate NY?
  • 11/16 - Mellowhype and Trash Talk at The Haunt: A night of hip hop and punk from two talented young bands.
  • 11/27 - Afrika Bambaataa at The Haunt: This American DJ and rapper who promotes social and political consciousness.  His Zulu Nation influence on the hip-hop scene has evolved into an electro-funk sound.  You may have heard him with Soulsonic Force on "Renegades of Funk"... or you may have heard Rage Against the Machine's version of the very same song.  Bambaataa was instrumental in the anti-apartheid album Sun City, and has worked with such names as Little Steven Van Zandt, Joey Ramone, Lou Reed, U2, Boy George, UB40 and so many others.
  • 11/29 - Supersuckers at The Haunt: This grunge-party rockabilly punk band performs their in-your-face sounds for one night only in Ithaca.
  • 11/30 - Marco Benevento at The Haunt: This pianist/keyboardist and his cohorts will treat you to some new sounds, and may just surprise you with their improvisational performance which will evolve as the evening and the crowd dictates!
December, 2012 Shows:
  • 12/1 - Dopapod at The Haunt: What is Dopapod?  Think 70's-era progressive rock with a good dose of electronica and funk, resulting in an almost polished-experimental sound and an auditory experience you won't soon forget!
  • 12/4 - OS Mutants at The Haunt: This psychedelic rock band hails from Brazil, and has been in existence since the 1960s with a steady stream of members to help the sound expand and evolve over the years and through a never-ending musical style.
  • 12/6 - Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds at The Haunt: One woman backed by a tribe of 8 men can produce some incredible musical creations.  With roots in soul and the blues, the expert talents of each member come together to explode in a powerhouse of music.
  • 12/7 - Ryan Montbleau Band with Jesse Dee at The Haunt: Ryan Montbleau's acoustic guitar styling fronts a true American band steeped in folk, blues, and a bit of funk.
  • 12/12 - Reverend Horton Heat at The Haunt: Twangy guitar, upright base, driving drums, and a good dose of humor create Rockabilly-with-a-dose-of-thrash that some call "psychobilly".  No matter what, you are always guaranteed a good time and a few laughs when the Reverend comes to town!
  • 12/13 - Ra Ra Riot at The Haunt: Hailing from nearby Syracuse, Ra Ra Riot blends Rock with indie and classic roots.
  • 12/14 - Richard Buckner at The Haunt: Alternative country music played straight from the soul.  Richard Buckner has had a challenging time of putting out new material.  But now that it's here, you won't be able to get enough!
  • 12/31 - Jimkata at The Haunt: Want to dance?  Want to jam?  Do both with Jimkata's synth-rock offerings!
From blues to hip-hop, rock to soul, you'll find the perfect end-of-2012 show in nearby Ithaca for any musical taste.  The Inn at Gothic Eves offers a welcoming and comfortable stay during your New York concert getaway, so reserve your room today!

Hazelnut Kitchen: A Unique NY Dining Experience Right Here in Trumansburg

When you stay at a bed and breakfast in a small town, there can be understandable concern about dining options for lunches and dinners.  While it is common for my guests to leave town during the day and enjoy lunch elsewhere, you are in for a real treat for dinner - right here in Trumansburg within walking distance of the Inn at Gothic Eves.  Hazelnut Kitchen at 52 East Main Street is just .3 miles west of my upstate New York bed and breakfast, and offers a dining experience unlike any other.

This little culinary gem might SEEM out of place in such a small town, however original owners Jonah and Christina McKeough had a vision:  to mix the amazing flavors of regional ingredients with a casually-elegant environment to produce amazing foods unique to the Finger Lakes region, and perfect for Trumansburg's palette.  Hazelnut's goal is to provide a laid-back atmosphere featuring exemplary cuisine.  The result may seem like an odd mix of big-city food sophistication in a quirky and friendly, small-town atmosphere... but it really does work!

As of 2012, the McKeoughs no longer own the restaurant.  But their excellent choice to leave the establishment in the very capable hands of Chef Justin Paterson, Sous Chef Matt Kelly, and Manager Lisa Jonckheere, guaranteed that their vision of providing an amazing dining option for our residents and guests.

Hazelnut Kitchen shares my belief of using quality, local organic foods to produce delicious fare for their clientele, demonstrated by the fact that they use the same suppliers that I use to produce the delicious breakfasts here at the Inn at Gothic Eves:  Sweet Land Farm CSA, Wide Awake Bakery, and Gimme! Coffee.  In fact, Hazelnut obtains their ingredients from no less than fifteen area farms, bakeries, dairies and coffee/tea houses.  Like my own menu, the Kitchen's creative (and sometimes surprising) menu is constantly changing as it follows the local growing seasons and celebrates the bounty produced herein.

Of course, you can't go wrong with anything Hazelnut Kitchen's menu, no matter when you visit:  the ever-changing food offerings consistently highlight familiar seasonal ingredients in a surprising array of methods. November's menu features great fall ingredients and flavors (including beets, squash, maple, apple, fall flower honey, pistachios).  You will currently find both German-based dishes and hearty, warm-your-insides favorites on the menu, while the dessert selection features tastes of cinnamon, pumpkin, cranberry, and hazelnut.

If you do have any questions about the menu, the staff has a thorough knowledge of what is currently offered, and can provide advice on the flavors you'll experience and can recommend wine pairings that will highlight the seasonal ingredients.  This amazing food paired with locally produced wines guarantees you a dining experience that you won't soon forget!

No matter what time of year you plan your Gothic Eves getaway, be sure to plan at least one evening at the Hazelnut Kitchen.  They are open for dinner from Thursday through Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday).  I will be happy to make reservations for you, or you can reserve your own table by calling 607-387-4433.  Make sure to tell them that Rose is sending you!
