Ithaca College and Cornell University Graduation Weekends, 2011, Special Events

Every year, Ithaca College and Cornell University have their Graduation ceremonies, special events. There is of course, an extreme amount of pride with each parent but there is an amount of anxiety too. Our guests have spent 4 or more years supporting their students, paying their tuition, visiting, dropping and picking them up throughout the year. By the time Graduation Weekend arrives, the parents are tired. They also are worrying about if there student will get a job and if it all was worth the trouble or money. We don't have the answer for this, we just have noticed the anxiety.

To address this anxiety, we try to make our guests feel comfortable during their stay. Our accommodations with plush mattresses, luxury sheets and linens, space for your belongings, and a hot tub and spa services to help relax, help to insure our parents will sleep well. Flexible check-ins and check-outs have also helped our parents. It is our goal to make your time with us optimal for you to enjoy this special event with your student. Early breakfasts, keys to enter the house, and phone access allow you to go on with your plans without accommodating your Innkeepers. We also are offering space for parties including space for large gatherings. We can provide formal event parties to casual cocktail parties.

Spring colors at a Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast

The gardens at our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast are looking spectacular. We had a lot of rain this spring but it has made the most beautiful flower displays. Blues, pinks, purples and white flowers are everywhere. I have taken a few pictures to show the spring glory.

The Forget-me-nots look like they are floating. The lime green of the trees and lush foliage of the early perennials are complimenting the gardens so well. The lilacs that I planted 7 years ago are finally mature shrubs and they surround the back of the property.

The Solomon Seal and may apples are blooming with the Hostas showing their beautiful foliage. The rhubarb is huge and will make great jam this year.

Come and see the gardens at our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast nearby Ithaca NY.

Mother's Day for an Innkeeper Nearby Ithaca, NY 2011

I have to say the weather was spectacular, sunny with a cool breeze for Mother's Day in the Finger Lakes Region of NY. My daughter, Rachel, got up and presented me with a card and a pair of very cool running shorts for the summer. I have been wearing hand me down shorts from someone and they were looking pretty bad. I was presented with another gift from one of my young ladies who work for me. She is really like another daughter who will be leaving me in August. She presented me a soft red scarf with beautiful black lines. Last, an old friend stopped in to the Bed and breakfast and gave me macaroons. I loved them, chocolate and pistachio flavored.

After breakfast dishes, straightening up the beds and a nap (ahhh!), Roman and Rachel took me out for a late lunch to Simply Red Lakeside Bistro where we had crab cakes and a burrito. This Bistro is located at Sheldrake Point Vineyard and Winery about 15 minutes north of our Bed and Breakfast. chef Sam's cooking is being recognized in many places and the last publication is Edible Manhattan. Check it out! We sat at the bar and enjoyed Simply Bloody Mary's overlooking Cayuga Lake. The food was excellent and we ended the meal with a blackberry Marsala trifle. I would go back for dinner and do it all over again if they were open in the evening.

We got back to the Inn around 4PM, and I needed to walk off lunch in the Finger Lakes National Forest with the dogs. I walk Chicken Coop Road which is mostly uphill but is west of the Inn about 10 minutes. There are many trails in this forest visiting ponds, fields, tree groves and mature forests but when I have the dogs, I avoid the more popular areas to let the dogs run free. The service berrys were all in bloom, wild strawberries and the may apples are just coming up. The dogs found their favorite ditches to swim in, dead animals to roll in, tasty treats to bury for next time and a swim in the pond which was not warm. Lucy and Copper enjoy this walk more than any other walk we do. It was a fine evening walk with my daughter Rachel. This walk always ends up with some dog shampoo and a hose.

I came back in and checked on the guests and then my emails to see if Anna, my oldest daughter, who is living in Thailand wrote me. I miss her so much but there were no emails. I was not content with this situation so I went to her blog, I found an excerpt about a summer salad and how all of the ingredients reminder her of something different from the states. This was my unintentional gift from her. I am going to paste it in for you to read if you want. My day is complete with a slow day spent with Rachel and Roman and a blog from my daughter. I hope that all of the mothers had as good of a day as I did.

The Finger Lakes is being graced with the sounds EMMYLOU HARRIS and her Red Dirt Boys to the ski slopes of Greek Peak Resort this July 15th, 2011. Emmylou Harris has come to Ithaca NY at the State Theater a number of times. Her appearances continue to enchant audiences. The Finger Lakes Region is a large wine region of NY so come, and stay in a Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast and enjoy the flavors of the Finger Lakes wines and the music. Tickets for the event are ON SALE TODAY! They will include two options: General Admission SEATED for $45.00 and LAWN seats for $35.00. They will also be available online at dansmallspresents.com or by calling 888-512-SHOW.

The last time she visited Ithaca NY, I could not get tickets. So I hung out downtown in the hopes to find tickets but was unsuccessful. After my evening, I drove home and noticed this local dive with tons of cars around. The next day, I found out that Emmylou had come to Trumansburg for a drink and another set. Something told me to stop but I didn't. So her new album is named just for me, a Hard Bargain. It was so hard, I couldn't find it. Hard Bargain came out April 26 on Nonesuch, is now available for pre-order in the Nonesuch Store bundled with an exclusive manuscript lyric sheet of the album's opening track, "The Road," a number of which will be autographed by Harris. On "The Road," Harris looks back on the formative time she spent with country/rock icon Gram Parsons at the beginning of her career.

In celebration of the album's release, Harris will embark on a series of performances including a showcase at the 2011 SXSW Music and Media Conference in Austin this month as well as special intimate shows at the El Rey in Los Angeles on April 21 and the Bowery Ballroom in New York on April 26. Additionally, on April 27, Harris will perform on the Late Show with David Letterman. For more tour information, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

Hard Bargain follows Harris' acclaimed 2008 release, All I Intended to Be, which received widespread acclaim-Newsweek called it an album that "shows that Harris is still the stalwart songbird at the top of the roost." The new album, which comprises 11 new songs by Harris as well as two covers, was produced by Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, Patty Griffin). A deluxe edition of the album, which includes a DVD featuring six performances interspersed with interviews, will also be available and is available for pre-order.

A 12-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Emmylou Harris' contribution as a singer and songwriter spans 40 years. She has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to countless fellow artists' recordings. In recognition of her remarkable career, Harris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

Don't miss this opportunity like I did last time to see great talent in the Finger Lakes Region of NY nearby Ithaca NY with Emmylou Harris, July 15th. If you don't get in, ask where the after party is!
